Gertrude Masters was an accomplished painter and a beloved art teacher of thirty-five years at the Haverford School, a Quaker school in Haverford, Pennsylvania, where she was the only woman teaching in the upper classes. She was trained at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and exhibited in 1925 at the Society of Independent Artists in New York City.
Like many artists of her time, Masters painted during the summers on Nantucket. She exhibited in group shows at the Easy Street Gallery from 1928 to 1931, with many prominent artists such as Anne Congdon, Hayley Lever, Volney Richardson, Elizabeth Saltonstall and Edgar Jenney.
