James William Cardwell was the first born child of Joshua Lee Cardwell and Susan Frances Hieatt. He was first married to Bettie Brown Mulholland and then to Frances Redman.

After the death of both of his parents in 1898 and 1899, he cared for his youngest siblings, Noble, Charles, Silas Grover, Cordelia, Jesse, Ernest, and Benjamin.

The State Journal, Frankfort Ky, Monday, April 12, 1954:

"James William Cardwell, 80, a retired farmer, died yesterday at his home near Graefenburg, Ky. He was a native of Owen County, Ky., but had lived in Graefenburg community many years. He was the son of the late Lee and Susie Hieatt Cardwell, and a member of the Graefenburg Baptist Church. Survivors are one son, Ellwood Cardwell; one daughter, Mrs. Genie Stucker, both of Graefenburg; two grandchildren; five brothers, T. A., Edward, Frank Cardwell, all of Franklin County; Jessie of Louisville, and Grover of Cornorsville, Ind.; one sister, Mrs. John Olds of Franklin County. Burial in Cardwell Cemetery in Franklin County, Ky."
