U.S. Congressman. Learning the printer’s trade, he was publisher of the New Hampshire Statesman, editor of the Eastern Journal at Biddeford Maine, editor of the Telegraph, the Press and the Cleveland Morning Leader in Ohio. He was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives, (1858-59) and appointed by Secretary Chase the Treasury Department, Washington, D.C., in 1861. He was appointed by President Lincoln in 1864, a member of the board of direct-tax commissioners for the State of North Carolina. Upon the readmission of the State of North Carolina to representation was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress, serving (1868-69). After his term, he was elected Sergeant at Arms of the United States Senate, serving (1869-79) and appointed secretary of the Ute Commission, 1880. He later moved to Boise, Idaho where he was the editor of the Boise Statesman and Daily Sun newspapers until his death at age 71.
