According to Westmoreland family history, John W. was raised by his maternal grandparents, John Franklin & Charlotte Westmoreland and kept his mother's maiden surname. When his parents, William & Polly, and his siblings left Stokes County by wagon heading west in 1858/59, John W. stayed behind in North Carolina and married Martha J. Gordy on December 23, 1859.
