William was the youngest of five children known to have been born to Sam and Emma (Henry) Sharp. He is found living with his parents in Houston County, Texas on the 1910 and 1920 census. W. H. Sharp is only 16 when his father dies in 1921, and by 1930, he is in Cincinnati, Ohio -- listed as an automobile mechanic -- with a wife and a young son. By 1931, that soon to be ex-wife and the little boy are back in Texas when a baby girl is born. On the 1940 census, William is still in Cincinnati, with a new wife and no children. A daughter would join this household in 1943.
