James filed his intention to marry Martha Hayward (daughter of Deacon Jacob Hayward and Martha Allen) on May 20, 1761 in Bridgewater, Plymouth county, Province of Massachusetts Bay. They had children:

Oliver 1765
James 1766
Galen 1769
Benjamin 1772


James is a Mayflower Descendant through his mother back to James Chilton. (Mayflower "Silver Books" Volume 15, page 80)
