Peter Sidney Beal was born in Lincoln County where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting for Civil War service at age 26, March 25, 1862. He was mustered into Company H, 52nd North Carolina Infantry as a Sergeant. He was appointed 3rd Lieutenant on October 1, 1862. He was captured at the Wilderness, Va, on May 6, 1864. He was confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, then transferred to Fort Delaware, Delaware on June 23, 1864. He was released from Fort Delaware on June 16, 1865 after taking the Oath of Allegiance.
