In 1867, the Ladies Memorial Association, a group of Fredericksburg women, purchased land for a Confederate Cemetery. The Association re-interred Confederate dead from battlefields and farms across the countryside where they had been hastily interred after the battles. Headstones supplied by various Southern States replaced the original cedar markers. The Ladies erected the Confederate Soldier Memorial amid the graves in 1884.
