Barbara J. Brooks, 82, daughter of John and Lucy Thea Shackelford was born May 30, 1928 in Bondurant, Iowa. She passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at The New Homestead, Guthrie Center, Iowa.

She graduated from high school in Des Moines and later attended Iowa State University. She married Gale Robert Brooks in Des Moines. Barbara enjoyed sewing, staying at home, cooking, listening to music, watching leaves change color's and spending time with her family.

Barbara is survived by her daughter Roberta (Mike) Ashby of Guthrie Center, five grandchildren, Megan, Samuel, Isaac, Seth, Savannah, three step-children, Stephen Brooks, Elaine Bye, Laurie Richardson, sisters; Audrey Wee of Waterloo, Peggy Coulter of Des Moines, Louise Prince, Fran Drake of Indianola. She was preceded in death by her parents, a infant brother, brothers; Ernest Shackelford and Ray Thomas.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2011 at the Twigg Funeral Home, Guthrie Center. Burial will be at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Des Moines. Visitation is Tuesday, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Twigg Funeral Home, Guthrie Center.
