Beloved father, grandfather, and brother, Judge Sterling R. Bossard passed away December 11, 1998.
Born December 10, 1911, son of Gisbert L. and Elsbeth Luck Bossard, the third of five children. Graduated from the University of Utah Law School with a Juris Doctorate degree in 1936. He married Laura Duke in the Salt Lake LDS Temple June 28, 1935. She died February 1976. He married Virginia W. Olsen in December 1976. She died October, 1998.Following admission to the Utah State Bar and United States Supreme Court, he practiced law in Salt Lake City and Richfield, Utah. He served 21 years as 6th District Juvenile Court Judge retiring in 1977.
He was presiding Juvenile Court Judge in 1972, member Utah State Bar Commission 1961-1971, President of Utah State Bar 1969-1970, District Attorney 6th Judicial District 1952-1956, President Southern Utah Bar Association 1960.
Judge Bossard was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held many positions including member of Richfield Second Ward Bishopric, Scout Master, Stake Aaronic Priesthood Committee, Deacons Quorum Advisor, Asst. High Priest Group Leader, Sunday School Teacher, Stake Sunday School Superintendent, Stake MIA President, and Stake Seventies Quorum President. He, with his wife Virginia, served in the London Hyde Park Mission for the church for 18 months in 1978-1980.
Judge Bossard was a member of the Lions International, President of Cedar City Lions and Holladay Lions. He served on the Advisory Board of the Utah Boys Ranch, and was Vice President of the Manti Jr. Chamber of Commerce. He was listed in "Who's Who in the West and Midwest" for 20 years; also listed in "Personalities in America". While Juvenile Judge he was known as "The Flying Judge" as he used his Cessna 172 to fly to court sessions in each of the 10 counties he served.
Judge Bossard is survived by two daughters, Jan Kay Zufelt (Darrell), Bountiful; and Karen Andrews of Corona, California; one stepdaughter, Carol Allred (Evan) of Centerville; sister, Eleanor Hill, Lancaster, California; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Bossard, Rexburg, Idaho; 11 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. His son, Alan Bossard, died March, 1994.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, December 15, 1998 in the Cottonwood 12th Ward, 1750 East Spring Lane. Friends may call on Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, 3401 South Highland Drive and at the ward on Tuesday from 12:45-1:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.
