She was born Oct 22, 1914, in Biron, Wis., and later moved to Rothschild, where she has lived in the same house for more than 80 years. She was the daughter of the late Raymond and Martha (Reimer) Cooper. On Nov 4, 1933, she married Lorenz E. Achterberg in Waukegan, IL. They shared 64 years of marriage before his death Jul 9, 1998.
Elva and Lorenz resided in Rothschild, and enjoyed many summers at their cottage on Lake Tomahawk. Elva loved to fish, play bingo and listen to the Milwaukee Brewers and the Green Bay Packers. She was a member of Women's Fellowship at Peace United Church of Christ in Schofield, the Rothschild Homemakers Club, Garden Club, Square Dancing Club, and Hobby Group. For many years, she worked in the meat department of Schaumburger's IGA in Rothschild.
She is survived by her loving family including her son, Gary (Florence) Achterberg, Wausau; daughter, Lois (Robert) Hudelson, North Fond du Lac; daughter-in-law, Bonnie Achterberg, Weston; grandson, Paul (Rhonda) Whitenack, Crystal, MN; granddaughter, Brenda Whitenack, Park Ridge, IL; stepgranddaughter, Paige Reynolds, Fond du Lac; three great-grandchildren, Matthew Whitenack of Castine, Maine, Andrew Whitenack of Park Ridge and Vanessa Whitenack of Crystal; two sisters-in-law, Ilene (Ralph) Chamberlain, Appleton, and Nathalie (Charles) Frock, Sun City Center, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Elva was preceded in death by her son, LeRoy Achterberg; a grandson, Curt Whitenack; a daughter-in-law, Judy Achterberg; and a brother, Harvey E. Cooper.
