Henry Echtinaw was the youngest of eleven children born to Rebecca (Snyder) and Peter Echternach. His father immigrated from a settlement named Echternach, Luxemborg, settling on the banks of Coldwater Lake. The spelling of the name was changed to "Echtinaw" after coming to the United States. Henry was born April 6, 1848 in Mahoning, Ohio.

He married Christina Yerks of Allen, Indiana on January 1, 1876. Three daughters were born to this marriage: Lida, Maude, and Alta.

After the living the majority of his life in Ovid Township, Henry died March 8, 1923.
