John Burkhardt
John F. Burkhardt Sr., 100, 609 E. Main St., died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at the King's Daughters' Hospital.
He was born May 1, 1901, in Trimble County, Ky., the son of Charles and Rose Binger Burkhardt. He had retired after 27 years' service with the Jefferson Proving Grounds Fire Department. He also was a former employee at the former Hoffman Hardware Store at Main and Walnut Street.
He was the oldest member of Fair Play Fire Co. 1 as well as the oldest firefighter in Indiana, and was a Sagamore of the Wabash. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the World War I era, serving in the U.S. Cavalry.
Surviving are a son, John F. Burkhardt Jr. of Indianapolis; a daughter, Norma L. Hall of Pacific Palisades, Calif.; a sister, Helen Nixon of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Elizabeth Rousch Burkhardt, in 1961; six sisters, Clara McClelland, Stella A. Seiferman, Henrietta Sampson, Isolina Bryant, Rose Eaglin and Virginia Smith; and three brothers, Charles, Harry and Louis Burkhardt Sr.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Vail-Holt Funeral Home Madison Chapel with burial in Springdale Cemetery.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and after 9 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Fair Play Fire Co. 1 will hold a memorial service at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to Fair Play Fire Co. 1.
