HOPE MILLS - Retired Army Staff Sgt. John Henry Adkins, 69, of 5425 Sunnybright Lane, passed away Monday, March 22, 2010, in Cape Fear Valley Medical Center. He was born in Anderson County, S.C., to Charles Thomas and Mary Colley Adkins. He was a Vietnam veteran and was retired from the U.S. Army after serving 21 years. His awards include a Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Leaving behind to cherish his memory are his two daughters, Katherine Elizabeth Tyler of Carlsbad, Calif., and Sharon Michelle Jones of Hope Mills; his son, John Henry Adkins Jr. of Fayetteville; a niece, Mary Bonifay Johnson of North Port, Fla.; two granddaughters, Jazmine Tanae Tyler of Carlsbad, and Courtney Nicole Jones of Hope Mills; and two grandsons, Dorion Quincy Jones of Hope Mills, and John Henry Adkins III of Fayetteville. A memorial graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. today, Friday, March 26, 2010, in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, with the rendering of full military honors. Services entrusted to Rogers and Breece Funeral Home of Fayetteville.
