DR. A. AUTREY DEAD. Noted Doctor and Capitalist of Mexico passed Away at Houston. Discoverer of Petroleum. He Was First to Enter the Mexican Fields - Conducted a Drug Manufacturing Business.
Houston, Tex, Feb. 24. This afternoon at 5 o'clock occurred the death of Dr. Adolpho Autrey at the home, No. 2708 Bagby street, of his son, Dr. A. M. Autrey, who has been living here for about eighteen years. Up to five weeks ago, he had lived in Mexico for many years. At that time he was brought here by his sons on account of his health. His life had been an interesting one, most of it having been passed in Mexico and part in Western Texas, though he was a native of Alabama. Dr. Adolfo Autrey was born in Alabama in 1835, came to Texas with his father and family in 1848, landing at Harrisburg. His father was a planter on the Brazos River for many years after his arrival in Texas, the Autrey place being located a few miles south of Richmond and cultivated with slave labor. There he grew to manhood and received a common school education. In 1855-56 he attended the University of Tennessee, medical department, where he graduated in l856 at the age of 21 years. After becoming a doctor in medicine and surgery he returned to Texas and remained only a few months, going to Mexico by way of New Orleans and arriving at Vera Cruz in May 1857. One year after his arrival in Mexico he married the Senorita Amada Rena at H----sco, Mexico, and remained in the State of Vera Cruz all through the war of French and Austrian intervention and the empire of Maximilian, often attending the hospitals of the forces of the emperor and again those of the republic. He lived at Papantla, in the State of Vera Cruz, Mexico, many years, engaging in the very successful practice of his profession. Being of a commercial spirit he always, besides pursuing his profession, engaged in the export trade of vanilla beans and mahogany, cedar und other valuable timbers. To him belongs the distinction of first discovering petroleum in the fields of Mexico, which are now known to be a continuation of the Texas fields. He organized the Mexican Petroleum Company in 1870 and refined kerosene oil at the Chapapote oil field in the canon of Papantla in 1871. Of late years he had lived in Tampico, Mexico, where he engaged in the manufacture of drugs and medicinal preparations, which are widely known throughout Mexico, and did a very profitable business. He leaves two sons in Houston, Dr. A. W. (sic) Autrey, oculist, who has lived in the city eighteen years, and is well known here, and Mr. Robert L. Autrey, secretary and treasurer of the Magnolia Brewery, who has also lived here twenty years. In this connection it may be stated that his eldest son, Dr. Autrey, several years ago married Miss Boyd, of the well known Galveston family.
