A lifetime resident of Scott County, he was a farmer, former partner in Harkness Construction Company and High Plains Drilling Company, and recently was owner and operator of a cattle transportation semi. He belonged to Prairie View Church of the Brethren, Friend, and the Aircraft Owners Pilots Association. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Larry Harkness; and a sister, Darla Harkness.
