Richard Abel was one of the original members of the Prince William County Police Dept. He started with the Prince William County Sheriff's Office. He retired from police service in 1997 with a combined police service time of 32 years. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police, the American Legion, the Sons of the Confederate Veterans, and Blue Knights #12. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1964.
