Bess was a member of the English department faculty at the University of Redlands

She lived in Redlands since 1934.

Writing was her avocation for many years, including poetry, short stories, magazine articles, and a book on children's literature.

In 1956 she was granted a sabbatical leave from the university to go to Italy for research work on the Renaissance and that work was also published.
