The son of Samuel & Martha (Schenk) Reese and stepson of Elizabeth (White) Reese, in 1860 he was an apprentice living with and/or working for master cabinet maker George D. Brown in Eden Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 6" tall and had sandy hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-two in Lancaster October 15, 1861, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. C, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. Wounded in the thigh (both legs are reported in various documents) at the battle of Chickamauga on September 19 or 20, 1863, he was later admitted to U.S. Hospital No. 19 at Nashville, Tennessee. Too infirm for active duty, on April 6, 1864, he transferred to the 148th Co., 2nd Battalion, Veteran Reserve Corps, and honorably discharged at term's end to date September 26, 1864.

He married Indiana-born Josephine Frances Dusch September 5, 1868 or 69, in Perry County, Indiana, and fathered John Edward (b. 07/07/70), Henry Michael (b. 05/29/72), and Amelia Mae (b. 03/08/80). By 1870, he was living with his family in Cincinnati, Ohio, and by 1880 in Louisville, Kentucky, where he died.

Buried on February 4, 1924.

Died at 4144 West Broadway.

NOTE: I used the birth year on his Death Certificate Photocopy. On the 1900 Federal Census Photocopy, the year is 1842.

Occupation on the 1900 Federal Census: Manager Coffin Mfr.

During the War for Southern Independence, he was in the Federal army as a Private - Co. C - 79th Pennsylvania Infantry.

Inventor:
- U.S. Patent 426,469 on April 29, 1890 for a "Burial-Casket"
