WILLIAMSFIELD - Betty Irene Gale, 87, Williamsfield, died at 6:35 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, 2011, at Seminary Manor in Galesburg.
Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28, at Williamsfield United Methodist Church. The Rev. Randy Douglass will officiate. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until the service at the church. Inurnment will be in Williamsfield Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to Williamsfield United Methodist Church, Williamsfield Public Library or Williamsfield Ambulance Service. Rux Funeral Home, Williamsfield, is in charge of arrangements.
She was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Galesburg, the daughter of E.D. Mackie Jr. and Katherine Elizabeth (Huber) Mackie. She married Merl E. Gale in 1940 in Knox County. He preceded her in death in 1989. She also was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Bob Cox; a son-in-law, Richard Rice; and a grandson, James Cox.
Survivors include a son, Preston (Cathy) Gale of Morton; a daughter, June Rice of Princeville; six grandchildren, RoAnne Edick, Jennifer (Ed) Caumiant, Rebecca Gale, Amanda (Brent) McGarr, Nate (Summer) Rice and Megan (Ryan) Vonesh; seven great-grandchildren, Courtney and Matthew Edick, Eddie Caumiant, Alex McGarr and Landon, Keian and Brinae Rice; a brother, Larry (Carol) Mackie of Williamsfield; and a double cousin, May Olive Flickinger of Williamsfield.
Betty graduated from Williamsfield High School in 1940 as its valedictorian. She had worked at Admiral in Galesburg. She loved God and her church family and was a member of Williamsfield United Methodist Church. She was also a member of WSCS and Williamsfield American Legion Auxiliary. She was an active volunteer in her children's years of growing up in church, school, 4-H and was a Cub Scout and Brownie Scout leader. She was also quite the accomplished seamstress for her family, including prom, wedding, bridesmaids dresses and crocheted afghans and baby items. Betty was an avid reader, card player and had loved dancing with Merl to many big band tunes and enjoyed her winter travels to Brownsville, Texas, and Apache Junction, Ariz., even traveling after her husband passed away. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and her family was her pride and joy.
