DIED.

BALDWIN— In Eureka. October 30. 1903. Acheson Baldwin, brother of Alexander Baldwin of San Jose, William Baldwin of Stockton. George A. Baldwin, Mrs. Sarah Mill, Mrs. John Hill and Mrs. Jane Wilson, all of Eureka, a native of New Brunswick, aged 74. Funeral notice hereafter.

A PIONEER PASSES AWAY Old Age Brings Death to Acheson Baldwin. Was One of the Best Known Loggers of This County.

Acheson Baldwin, one of Humboldt's pioneer loggers and who was known throughout the length and breadth of the county, died at his home in this city last evening. The cause of death was a general breaking down due to old age. The deceased was born in Elmsville, N. B., and was almost 75 years of age In 1859 he left the home of his birth, and accompanied by John Hill, his brother-in-law, journeyed to Portland, Me., where he embarked on a vessel for the Isthmus. On arrival at Aspinwall, they crossed the Isthmus on mules and took a steamer for San Francisco. After a short stay at the metropolis they came to Eureka, which had since been the home of the deceased. The first position he obtained in the county, forty-four years ago, was that of a logger, his employer being Moses Lucas, who had a camp at Worthington Prairie, near where Stephen Hill now lives. He worked for various firms until fifteen years ago, since which time he had retired. For several years past the deceased had been totally blind. Of the near relatives there are three sisters, Mrs. Alexander Wilson, of Freshwater, Mrs. John Hill of Eureka and Mrs. Joseph Hill of New Brunswick, who is visiting in Eureka; and also three brothers, George, William and Alexander Baldwin, of Eureka, Stockton and San Jose, respectively. The funeral will probably take place some time tomorrow afternoon.
