After a DNA testing, we have learned regarding his parents:
Father: William Pittman, born March 4, 1767 in Northumberland Co., VA.
married 1) Elizabeth Hill on November 15, 1901
married 2) Mary (Polly) Dodson on January 12, 1909 in Lancaster Co., VA.
Grandpa William married Amanda S. Eads July 26, 1837 in Morgan Co., IL. Probable son is Zolphi Pittman who was born in 1838. I found him on the 1850 census, but he was not in the Pittman home.
After Amanda's death, Grandpa William married Mary Ann Johnson on July 8, 1841 in Scott Co., IL. She bore him ten children and later they adopted another son. After moving the family to Cedar, Van Buren Co., IA for a few years, they finally settled in Miami Co., KS where they lived out their lives.
"The Western Spirit," Paola, KS, 22 Jan 1904, p 1 "The death of William Pittman at his home near Beagle on the 15th last, takes from the rapidly decreasing ranks of pioneers one of the grandest men of Miami county. He was in his ninety-fourth year and retained all his mental vigor till the last. He came to Kansas in 1857, lived his useful life in two townships--Osage and Mound. The funeral on Sunday was the largest known for many years. Mrs. Pittman died several years ago." (Actually it was less than a year).
Our precious 3rd great Grandpa lived a healthy 93 years, 2 months, 2 days before the Lord called him to his Heavenly home and lovingly joining both of his wives and babies.
During the summer of 1997 Aunt Dyllis and I made a trip west and found this cemetery. What a joy it was to finally make a connection with our mysterious Grandparents. In 1999 I had the privilege of finding the land in Scott Co., IL that he purchased way back in 1830 from the federal government for $1.30 an acre. When I drove up to the property I stood in awe with wonderment at the dairy farm it had become. I wondered how many times our family walked, talked and played on this beloved land and the joy of their lives as they lived there during the 1830s & 1840s. Within a day or two, I found their home in town and was able to find deeds and the division of property before finally being sold when they moved to Iowa with their young family.
