Virgil A. Altenburg 8101 North 6th St., Kalamazoo, MI Passed away Monday morning at the Ridgeview Manor Nursing Home, Kalamazoo. Mr. Altenburg was born June 29, 1896 in Perinton, son of Willliam J. and Emma dswift (?) Altenburg. Following graduation from Belding High School, he worked as a purchasing agent for the Duplex Truck Co. of Lansing. Leaving this position in 1921, he enrolled at Western Michigan Normal School where he organized and directed Western's first and. (Nothing more in this sentence) Mr. Altenburg received his AB degree from Western and his MA degree from the University of Michigan. He served as superintendent of schools in Lawrence and Coopersville and as a science teacher and band director of Gobles Public Schools. He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa, NEA, NRTA, Local Kalamazoo County Association of Retired Teachers, MRTA, MEA, a life member of Otsego Masonic Lodge 78 F & AM, life member of Otsego Bradley Chapter 169 OES, member of Veterans of World War I Barracks 3423. In World War I, he served as a corporal in Headquarters Company U.S. Engineers, Narrow Gauge Railroad Division. Mr. Altenburg was also a member of the Museum Board of John Gray Memorial Museum of Alamo Township and helped organize the museum. On June 21, 1924 he was united in marriages with Rachel E. Piper, who survives. Also surviving are 3 brothers, Jesse of Lansing, George of Old Mission and Clarence of Seminole, Fla; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Winkel Funeral Home, Otsego, whre services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 o'clock, Rev. Seth Clay officiating.
