He studied at the University of Virginia and enlisted in the Confederate Army 21 April 1861, and was romoted sergeant. He was elected junior lieutenant 19 April 1862 and promoted to first lieutenant and Aide-de-camp on General William Nelson Pendleton's staff in June of 1862. He surrendered at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865. He then entered the Theological Seminary of Virginia, at Alexandria, and was graduated in June of 1868. On 30 May 1878, he was consecrated bishop of West Virginia. A missionary in Brazil and Puerto Rico, he married twice.
