Bettie L. Acker, 85, 2337 Elk St., Lake City, died on Friday, March 1, 2002, at Hamot Medical Center.
She was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Conneaut, Ohio, daughter of the late Walter and Glendine Whiteman Woodard.
She was a member of Grace Episcopal Church, Lake City; OES, Indiana Harbor Chapter No. 378, East Chicago, Ind.; Daughters of the Niles, Selket Temple No. 140, Erie. She was a past vice chairman of the Erie County Republican Party and a past president of Erie County Council of Republican Women; past director of the Girl Scouts day camp and a past den mother of the Cub Scouts. She served as a director of Rebecca Drill Team in the west county area. She was a past president of Pi Sigma Phi sorority, Alpa-Cappa Chapter, East Chicago, Ind.; and past president of Elk Creek Council.
For many years, she wrote for the Girard Cosmopolite, The Erie Times and The Morning News.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Acker, on May 20, 2001. They were married on Feb. 3, 1939. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Frances Varady, and a brother, Bernard Woodard.
She is survived by a son, Robert Acker and his wife, Mary Ann, of Wickcliffe, Ohio; four grandchildren, Cynthia Lynn Allen, Tiffany Kirk, Robert Acker Jr. and Bethany Nichols; three great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
