Albert G. Gerry Tierney, age 85, of Norwell, formerly of Boston and Marblehead, died peacefully at home January 4, 2011, after an extended illness. Beloved husband of Madeleine (Browne) Tierney (Lynn Hagar). Father of Albert G. (Sandy) Tierney III and his wife Cathy of Wellesley, Elisabeth (Perky) Magee and her husband Jody of Marblehead, Jean Tarrant and her husband Bob of Saratoga Springs, NY, Joan Powers and her husband David of Saratoga Springs, NY. Stepfather of Kimberly Hagar-Johnson and her husband David of Golden, CO, James Hagar and his wife LynnAnne of Essex and Stephanie Brady and her husband Peter of Medford. Grandpa Gerry Grandfather leaves thirteen loving grandchildren. He is survived by his brother Philip and his wife, Bettina of McLean, VA, three nephews and his former wife, Elisabeth Colson Tierney of Peabody. Mr. Tierney graduated from Buckingham Brown & Nichols School and the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. During World War II, he served in the Navy as engineering and gunnery officer in the Pacific. After the war, he entered Tufts University, graduating in 1949, and Boston College Law School, graduating in 1953. He attended special courses at Columbia Medical School and Military Justice School with the United States Naval Reserve. Mr. Tierney was a trial attorney in Massachusetts for over fifty years. He was an avid sportsman who loved to sail, ski and Scuba dive. His many other interests included music, reading, flying his plane and gliders and competitive pistol shooting. Gerry was grateful to be a citizen of the United States and was hopeful that adversity will be met with strength and resilience. Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the United Church of Christ, 460 Main Street, Norwell, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerrys memory may be made to the Stoeckle Center, c/o M.G.H. Development Office, 165 Cambridge Street, Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114.
