My Beautiful Girl, Curiosity

I was leaving home one afternoon when I heard the meowing. Following the sound, I went over to an abandoned shed, opened the door and inside was a tiny little kitten. She was beautiful. I talked to her for a few minutes and she seemed quite happy to be on the outside. Satisfied that the kitten was safe, I walked back to my house and started to get inside my car when I noticed the kitten was keeping up pace with me so well that I almost stepped on her. As I sat in the driver's seat and looked down at that kitten, my heart melted and I invited her for the drive.

We named her Curiosity for obvious reasons and it was a perfect name for her. She followed me all through the house and slept by my head. She was beautiful, playful, stubborn and very jealous!

A couple years after we had Curiosity, my oldest daughter got a cat of her own. Our two female cats got along great which was a relief. Although Curiosity loved her feline friend (Whiskers), she did not want me to. One night I was petting my daughter's cat and I noticed Curiosity giving me a glare. I thought it was funny that she looked so mad and had the bad idea to antagonize her. So I petted Whiskers more and started talking to her in that ‘you are so cute' voice we reserve for animals and babies. Before I had the chance to look back at Curiosity for her reaction, she was on my back with her teeth firmly (but still gentle) in the back of my neck. After getting some help with removing her, I apologized….every day for weeks (I had a lot of making up to do). I had learned my lesson though!

Curiosity and Whiskers both had a litter of kittens within days of each other. As the babies grew they would nurse off both of their mommies!!! It was adorable! After the babies were old enough they were given to our neighborhood Pet Store. They were all so beautiful.

One of Curiosity's favorite things to do (aside from drinking my coffee) was to take one of my daughters hair bands and bring it to the only area in our house that had tile instead of carpet and play with it. She would use her claws to toss it into the air and then bat it around with her paws. She could do this for hours. It was even cuter as she got older because it was as if she was reliving her younger years!

Curiosity's health started to deteriorate suddenly. Age, it seemed had crept out of nowhere and she could no longer jump onto the couch. I would pick her up and put her where she wanted to be. Her once vibrant fur took on a more disheveled look.

On Wednesday, December 12 there was something different in her eyes. With a look, she told me that it was time. I decided to stay up with her and placed her on my lap. Her breathing was slower than normal. She looked so tired and I felt so helpless. I softly petted her; leaned down to kiss her head and she gave me a tiny lick on my face. It was the last kiss she ever gave me. We fell asleep together and when I woke up my beautiful Curiosity whom I had loved every single day for fourteen years had crossed over.

She was a big part of our family and is missed and loved every single day.
