Husband Sarah "Sally" (Colbert) Dunaway

The following information on John Dunaway comes from a book by Vann Smith entitled Arkansas Pioneer Folk of An Arkansas Son.
John Dunaway was born on May 25, 1798 in Virginia. Census records suggest that he was born in Richmond County and was the son of Samuel Dunaway a Revolutionary soldier. There have been scanty traditional stories that relate to him having been born in Holland and stowing away on a tobacco boat owned by Jefferson Davis. This is highly unlikely.
What we do know about John Dunaway is that sometimes before 1830 he came to Tennessee and settled near, if not in, Fayette County. He probably had come from Virginia with his brother Samuel. Soon John met Sarah "Sally" Colbert and they were married. Their first child James Madison Dunaway was born on June 17, 1830.
It was probably late that year that the Dunaways decided to make the move to Arkansas. the route by which they came and their means of travel are not disclosed by any record and would be left wholly to the imagination but for one lone and oft repeated saying that "Martha Jane (their second child) was born in an oxcart on the Boston Mountains where they were camped on the way here". Apparently they were not alone on the journey but were accompanied, at least part of the way, by some of Sarah's kindred, among them her brothers, Pleasant (Pleas), Wade, William and John S., and her sister Elizabeth (Betsy), and her husband, Alexander Ross.
Why this family came to Arkansas is unknown. Perhaps, the Colberts were trying to find some of their Cherokee relatives who had settled with the Eastern Band of Cherokees in the north-western portion of Arkansas. It is a known fact that Sarah was part-Cherokee.
John Dunaway and his wife settled on Loller's Creek in 1830, and were one of the first two families to do so, the other being the family of Ruben Loller for whom, it is said, the creek was named. Then, the place of their settlement on Lollar's Creek was in Washington county, but in 1836 became located in Madison county.
In addition the records disclose that John Dunaway was among the very first taxpayers in Madison County; that he was the second person to homestead on Lollar's Creek in the Richland township; that he was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows; that he and his wife became the parents of six sons and five daughters in that township; and that, when they died (he in 1883, she in 1896), their remains were laid to rest in that sanctuary of their dead, on Lollar's Creek, known for nearly one hundred years as the Dunaway Cemetery.

DNA (from John Dunaway to Calvin Dunaway to William Dunaway to Myrtle Dunaway Davenport ) has proven Samuel Dunaway to be Swedish/Danish. Sarah Colbert family was ashkinazi jewish. Some of the Colbert may have married into the Cherokee but not in John Dunaways line. My grandma Myrtle Dunaway Davenport told us the story of Samuel coming from Sweden. She said her Dad William was a Swede. Dna proves this was true.
