Sarah Green Best was born in Indiana, the daughter of he daughter of James M. and Effie L. (McCann) Fletcher. She was raised on the Fletcher farm between Monrovia and Farmington, Kansas. She married Luther Best in 1868. They had four children to their union: Louisa Catherine "Lula" Best, Edwin Myers "Ed" Best, Leonard Aaron "Lenny" Best and Hodda Harry "Hod" Best.
