Caroline had an amazing life. Her mother, Lucina Drake Bullen, died when she was only four; her father remarried twice, and had 17 children in all. Twelve survived.

The family lived in Clinton, New York, but land was expensive there, and they moved west to Kenosha when Caroline was a young woman. Wisconsin was still wilderness then, and the Bullens were among the first white settlers in Kenosha. Caroline taught school there.

On April 5, 1843, she married Joseph Very Quarles, who had come west from New Hampshire. He wrote in a letter to a friend who had been urging him to marry for several years:

"Dear Sir,

Yours of the 7th was duly read. You reminded me of a long neglected duty, and I determined to follow your recommendations as far as circumstances would permit, but was too much in haste to return to my native state to seek a "yankee girl". On the receipt of yours I immediately started with the cake in my hand and fortunately succeeded in catching a prairie girl, and the result is that I doubled on the 5th inst."

Children:
1. Joseph Very Quarles, Jr., U.S. Senator from Wisconsin.
2. Charles Quarles, lawyer.
3. Lydia Very Quarles, died at one year old.
