Born in Riedlingen, Germany, the son of Jakob Keppeler, a clocktower mechanic, clockmaker, and innkeeper in Riedlingen, and Antonie Pfeiffer. He married Rosalie Endres in Stuttgart in 1873.

His older brother William Keppler was the first of his family to immigrate to the US around 1853 after the death of their father, and settled in Galveston, TX. Anton and his family followed, and immigrated to New Haven, CT in 1881. The last of the Keppeler's to immigrate was Anton's younger sister Josephine (Keppeler) Baier, who also immigrated and settled in New Haven, CT in 1883.

Eventually, Anton and his family moved from New Haven to Butte, MT in 1892, where Anton worked as a machinist.
