U.S. Congressman. He attended Emory and Henry College Virginia, studied law at the University of Virginia, was admitted to bar and commenced the practice of law in Huntsville, Alabama. During the Civil War, he served as a Lieutenant Colonel on the staff of General Longstreet in the Confederate Army. After the war, he resumed the practice of law and in 1876, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-fifth Congress, serving until 1879. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he practiced law until his death at age 83.
