U.S. Congressman. He was successful in the foundry and machine business Marshalltown, Iowa, (1865-88) and a member of the City Council of Marshalltown, (1874-77). In 1885, he successfully contested as a Democrat the election of James Wilson to the Forty-eighth Congress and was reelected to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving until 1887. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he moved to San Diego, California, in 1887, engaged in the real estate business and was collector of Internal Revenue, from 1893, until his death at age 69.
