Staff Sgt. Omar Aceves, Sr. was born on November 17, 1980 in El Paso, Texas. He was killed in action while serving with the 10th Mountain Division's 7th Engineer Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade in the Ghazni Province of Afghanistan on January 12, 2011. Staff Sgt. Aceves joined the U.S. Army in February 2005 and was subsequently stationed at Fort Hood, Texas until 2008 when he arrived at Fort Drum, NY. Aceves previously deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from October 2006 to January 2008. Aceves' awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Badge, two Army Commendation Medals, 6 Army Achievement Medals, 3 Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the NATO Medal, the Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, the Air Assault Badge and the Marksman Qualification Badge.
