Died Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at Kindred of Hollywood Hospital, Hollywood, FL. Mr. Harkness Hugh Butler of Crawfordville Drive. Funeral services were held at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church, 623 Crawford Avenue, with Reverend Mark S. Pierson, eulogist. Burial in Mount Olive Memorial Gardens.
Mr. Harkness Hugh Butler was a native of Miami, Florida. He was a member of Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church and a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Mr. Butler received his undergraduate degree (Music Education) from Tennessee State University, Nashville, Tennessee. He also studied at South Carolina State University. This education background served as the basic for his 31 year career as a teacher and band director. His teaching career in this area began at Jefferson High School, Bath, South Carolina. After his employment in South Carolina he worked in several schools in Richmond County until his retirement. His last teaching position prior to his retirement was at George P. Butler High School, Augusta, Georgia. After retirement, he completed a course of study and became a licensed realtor. He remained a part of the Meybohm Company until his illness.
