US Diplomat. Prior to becoming a diplomat, he was a real estate developer in San Diego. He purchased and restored the historic Hotel Del Coronado which was featured in the movie "Some Like It Hot." He served as the United States Ambassador to Switzerland from 1993 until his death in 1996. He was given a full military funeral and burial at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. A year after his death it was revealed that he lied about serving and being wounded in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was removed from Arlington and reburied at El Camino Memorial Park in La Jolla, California.
