Retired Army Lt. Col. Michael John Ackerman, 56, of Fayetteville, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008, at N.C. State Veterans Nursing Home in Fayetteville.

Mr. Ackerman spent most of his civil service career at Fort Bragg Directorate of Public Works.

A funeral Mass will be held at noon Monday, June 2, 2008, at Good Shepherd Catholic Church in Hope Mills with the Rev. Thanh N. Nguyen officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 tonight at Reeves Funeral Home in Hope Mills.

Mr. Ackerman is survived by his wife, Sue Ackerman; stepdaughter, Deanna Cook of Kannapolis; parents, John and Constance Ackerman of Mitchell, S.D.; three sisters, Maryl Hatwan of Mitchell, Barbara Vasquez and husband Tomas of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Ladonna and husband Bruce Kniffin of Yankton, S.D.; brother, James and wife Judy Ackerman of Fairmont, Minn.; and a multitude of other cherished family members and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either the Alzheimer's Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601; the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 7023, Merrifield, VA 22116; or to Good Shepherd Catholic Church, 5050 Oak St., Hope Mills, NC 28348.
