Immigrated to New York in 1850s with brothers, James and John, and sisters, Sarah and Elizabeth. Worked as gardener. Applied for citiznship in June 1858 and became a citizen in October 1860. Of Scots/Irish decent, he was a protestant of Anglican Communion and was married April 1861 to Elizabeth Mary Jane Boyan of Dublin at Episcopal Church of Redemption, 11th Street, New York City. Their Children were, Fanny A. Rice (John), Thomas (Christian Brannan), Elizabeth A. Wilson (Abe), Alexander, Jr.(Sara Grace), Anna A. Mitchel (George)and Sarah Jane, who died at age 5. His burial service was held 28 Feb. at St John's Episcopal Church in Jersey City. His death certificate states he was buried at New York Bay Cemetery. The Cemetery does not have a record of his burial.
