Ernesto was survived by his wife Viola Chavez; daughter Valerie (Rick Martinez); beloved grandson whom he adored Alejandro Martinez; sisters Rosina Pacheco of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Zulema Harvey of Santa Fe; beloved nephew Manuel Chavez of Lawndale, California; sisters-in-law Flora Chavez of Lawndale, California and Angie Valdez (husband Robert) of Chimayo; brother-in-law Ruben Sandoval of Chimayo and Benjamin Duran of Santa Cruz; mother-in-law Josefina Armijo; special and dear friends Dan and Mickie Medina of Chimayo and numerous other relatives and friends.
Ernesto was a Veteran of the U.S. Army and had been stationed in Germany.
Public visitation and Rosary were held 10 January 2011 in the Sangre de Cristo Chapel of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. Mass of Christian burial was on 11 January 2011 at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Chimayo. Burial followed at the Santa Fe National Cemetery. Pallbearers: Rick Martinez, Jesse Cordova, Tony Vigil, Robert Valdez, Dennis Chavez and Manuel Chavez. Honorary pallbearers: Alejandro Martinez and Dan and Mickie Medina.
