Mrs. Hilma Eloise Duffy, 91, died on Sunday, December 26, 2010 at Wisteria Gardens in Pearl, MS. A Memorial Mass, and celebration of her life will be scheduled for a later date in Mallard, IA.

Hilma Duffy was born on August 31, 1919 in Prairie City, IA. She was the daughter of George Raymond Gilbert and Kate Hess. Mrs. Duffy graduated from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, IA in 1940 with a Bachelor's degree in Home Economics and English. She taught in Lineville, Derby, and Mallard, IA.

On June 19, 1946, Hilma was united in marriage to Basil Phillip Duffy in Des Moines, IA. She was a homemaker, and an active member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mallard, IA. In October 2003, she moved to Brandon, MS.

She is survived by her daughter Kaileen R. Thieling (Stanley) of Brandon, MS; grandchildren: Dr. Craig Thieling (Amy) of Hattiesburg, MS; Sarah E. Thieling of Wilmington, NC, and Alison M. Smith (Christopher) of Brandon, MS; six great-grandchildren: Anderson Cole, Natalie Dodd, and Mallory Clark Thieling of Hattiesburg, MS, Quinn Ashenafi and Simon Marcus Thieling of Wilmington, NC, and Audrey Marie Smith of Brandon, MS; sister Janice Ruth Moss (Kenneth) of Iowa City, IA; sister-in-law Mildred Gilbert of Prairie City, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Basil Phillip Duffy, daughter Karen Ann Duffy, sister Laura Philippson of Manchester, IA, brothers Dennis M. Gilbert, Clarence Gilbert, and Marvin Gilbert, all of Prairie City, IA.

Mrs. Duffy enjoyed sharing her love of reading with children, and to celebrate that interest, memorials may be made in support of Early Childhood Development programming at Central Mississippi Regional Library System, P.O. Box 1749, Brandon, MS 39043-1749 or the Mallard Public Library, P.O. Box 248, Mallard, IA 50562.
