WEST ROCKPORT – Joan A. Bragdon, 74, died following a long illness, at her home early Thursday, December 21, 2006. Born in Seattle, Washington, October 28, 1932, she was the daughter of Wesley S. and Ardella "Pat" Patterson Millet. Educated in Seattle schools, she was a 1951 graduate of Queen Ann High School. May 3, 1952, she enlisted in the United States Navy. While serving at the Naval Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois, she met her future husband, Richard D. Bragdon. The couple married at Chicago, March 6, 1954.

Following her own and her husband's discharge from Naval duty, they made their home in Portland, ME. They later moved to Rockland, where she worked at the Sears Roebuck store and with AT&T. In support of her husband's career with First National Stores, she moved with him to Kittery.

While living in Kittery, she attended Exeter School of Nursing in Exeter, NH, earning a certificate as a Licensed Practical Nurse. In the early 1960s, the Bragdons returned to Portland, where she worked at City Hospital which is now the Baron Center and at South Portland Nursing Home. In 1962 they returned to Rockland. Mrs. Bragdon worked at the former Knox County General Hospital in the Operating Room and as a Lab Clerk. For several years until her medical retirement in 1991, Mrs. Bragdon served as Program Director of the Knox – Waldo – Lincoln Counties Early Periodic Screening & Diagnostic Treatment Program. She often said this was one of the most fulfilling and rewarding endeavors she ever accomplished.

She was pre-deceased by a sister-in-law Corinne Martel and two brothers-in-law Don and Dale Bragdon.

Besides her husband Richard of 52 years of West Rockport, she is survived by one son David Bragdon and his wife Pamela of Rockland; one daughter Susan Kelly and her companion Richard Blair of West Rockport; seven grandchildren, David & Kevin Bragdon, Joshua & Jessica Schatzer, Casey, Katherine & Mackenzie Kelly; two great-grandchildren, Jackson Riley Kelly & Christian Scott Schatzer; four sisters-in-law, Marie Rickett of Florida, Joan Kormos of Michigan, Pam Adams and Terri Lynn Bragdon both of Portland, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Interment will be at a later date in Forest City Cemetery, South Portland. (Burpee, Carpenter & Hutchins on-line)
