George D. Dorn, 88, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 at the VA Medical Center in Omaha. George was born July 5, 1922, in Burt County to Lewis and Violet (Moore) Dorn.
George married Irene Millward on Nov. 17, 1945, in Manchester, England. She died in 2004.
Survivors are: daughters and sons-in-law, Sandy and Neil Burr of Olathe, Kan., Val and Ed Schuster of Minden and Becky and Russ Schwenk of St. Libory; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Vicky Dorn of Grand Island; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Vidy and J.D. Little of Marshfield, Mo., and Virginia and Ray Simpson of Craig; grandchildren; Mike Schwieger, Kelly Schwieger, Kinsey Bauer, Kiffin Parrish, Johnny Dorn, Bailee Schuster, Danni Schuster and Max Schwenk; great-grandchildren Cade, Cooper, Carson Schwieger, Hayden Parrish and Marlee Bauer and a host of friends and relatives.
George was welcomed into heaven by his wife; parents; brothers, Bud, Bill and John Dorn; and sisters, Margaret, Jean, Elaine and an infant sister.
George was raised in Tekamah, where he graduated from high school. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 during World War II.
George was united in marriage to Irene Millward on Nov. 17, 1945, in Manchester, England. Following the military, they lived in Tekamah. In 1957, they moved to Alda, where they owned and operated the Siesta Motel. At the same time, George worked as a heavy-equipment mechanic for Missouri Valley Construction. They sold the motel and moved to Grand Island in 1965. George also was proud to have worked on the Alaskan Pipeline. He was a caregiver for his wife for 29 years.
George was a member of the American Legion and VFW. George enjoyed gardening and sharing his tomatoes with others. He was an avid Husker baseball fan, having watched his grandson pitch. He was always up for a good chat and sharing his advice. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and always cared for others.
George had close and special relationships with his sons-in-law and daughter-in-law. He was proud to have served his country and was grateful of the care he received from the caregivers at the VA hospitals in Grand Island and Omaha. The family is especially grateful to his neighbors for looking out for him through the years.
