Gertie attended Hurley schools and graduated from the Hurley High School with the class of 1942. She was employed at the Doust Pasty Shop and for Dr. Harry Shear as a dental assistant. For many years, she owned and operated the Travelers Motel on U.S. 2 in Bessemer with her husband Anthony. Gertie enjoyed dance and music. She was a member of the Gogebic Range Tamburitzans as a choreographer and musician. She was a dance instructor and director of "stunt nights" and enjoyed studio recording music. She was a lifetime member of the PTA, a homemaker and gardener.
On August 15, 1953, she was married to Anthony Michaels at the St. Simon Orthodox Christian Church, in Ironwood by Rev. Fr. Nickanor Kollick. Anthony survives. Also surviving is a daughter; Joanne Michaels, of Ironwood; two sons, Father Anthony (Rick) Michaels of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Craig (Vicky) Michaels of Apple Valley, Minn.; three grandaughters, Rebecca Michaels and Jennifer (Joel) Kangas both of Apple Valley and Mary Cotie of Dallas, Texas. Also surviving is a sister Sylvia Shutes of Ironwood and many nieces and nephews. Beside her parents, Gertrude was preceded in death by brothers, Rodimere, Elias, Robert, George and Vulcan.
Also preceded in death by sisters; Julia Simon, Mary Peterson and a sister Helen in childhood.
Funeral Services will be held at the St. Simon Orthodox Christian Church, 226 East Harding Avenue, Ironwood on Wednesday, December 29, 2010, at 10 a.m. Father Anthony (Rick) Michaels will officiate.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, Dec. 28, from 5 until 7 p.m. at the church where Trisagion Prayers will be recited at 7 p.m.
Burial will be in the Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.
