Mary E. Lewis Black was the daughter of Jacob and Delilah Robinson Lewis. She married Jacob Black circa 1876, presumably in North Carolina; and to this union was born eight known children, including - Leona Lee (Hodges), Mattie L. (Stapler), James A., Nancy Ellen (Clemens), and Sina L. In the 1900 US Federal Census, Mary is listed as having been the mother of eight children, six of whom were living in 1900.

Mary died May 24, 1925, in Woodville, Alabama. Her death certificate reveals that her cause of death was paralysis (perhaps caused by a stroke).
