Ruby Robena Bell McClelland was born August 4, 1901 in Bryan County, Georgia. One of eleven children, she was the third child of David Clayton Bell, Sr. and Edna Josephine Downs Bell. She married William Leon McClelland, and they had five children: Tarver Lee McClelland, Nevada Faye McClelland Brittingham, Shirley Gwenell McClelland Owens Holt, Doris Glenda McClelland Carpenter, and Melba Jo McClelland Royal Lott. Ruby died after a short illness at age 73 on March 9, 1975 at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia and is buried at Old Fellowship Baptist Church Cemetery in Bulloch County, Georgia. Her funeral was at the Smith-Tillman Mortuary in Statesboro, Bulloch County. She was a member of Olive Branch Baptist Church in Bryan County. Her ancestry was English, Welsh, and--through the Bell surname--Native American (Lumbee).
