Sally McGinnis Abernathy, 92, a resident of Cardinal Healthcare, formerly of Stanley, died Thursday at her residence. She was a native of Stanley and the last remaining child of the late Jonas Edward and Essie Lay McGinnis. She was preceded in death by her husband William H. Abernathy, four sisters Flora B. McGinnis, Florence E. Slaton, Genora L. Abernathy, and Mary Ola Walker, six brothers Murray E. McGinnis, Roy G. McGinnis, Cecil L. McGinnis, James Wilson McGinnis, Jake A. McGinnis Sr. and William Hazel McGinnis. Mrs. Abernathy was a homemaker and a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church in Mount Holly.
Survivors include a son Doyt Abernathy of Virginia. Daughters and sons-in-law Janice A. and Ronald Robinson of Gastonia, Jill A. and Mitchell "Mickey" Byers of Iron Station, and Ann Abernathy of Houston Texas. Six grandchildren: Bart Abernathy of Concord, Mary Elizabeth "Beth" Godwin of Harrisburg, Angela Robinson of Little River, S.C., Brian Robinson of Ranlo, Greg Robinson of Gastonia, Trent Byers of Maiden and 12 great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank the staff at Cardinal Healthcare for their care of our mother.
A graveside service will be held at Hillcrest Gardens Cemetery in Mount Holly with Rev. Eddie McGinnis officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly. Memorials may be made to Family Life Center, Hickory Grove Baptist Church, 3717 Hickory Grove Road, Gastonia N.C. 28056.
