Helen Bassett Walker died at the New Horizons Care Center Thursday morning, Dec. 23, 2010, at the age of 103.
Helen was born on Sept. 16, 1907, at Kane. She lived there during her growing up years.
After she finished grade school, she attended the Big Horn Academy at Cowley for two years, finishing high school at Lovell. During her senior year she took Normal Training, or training to become a teacher. After she graduated from high school, she attended school at Laramie.
That fall she taught at Four Corners, Wyo. The next fall she taught at Little Buffalo School, which was south of Gillette. Her third year of teaching, she taught at Ten Sleep and soon after she married Ariel Walker and moved to Anaconda, Mont., for a short time, ending her teaching career of about 24 years.
They moved back to Kane, and then on to a farm west of Lovell. Here they built their home and planted an orchard. Some of the fruit trees are still producing today.
Helen and Ariel had five boys, all born in the Lovell area: Dean (Rebecca Allred), Lewis (Joan Huddart), Robert (Yvonne Sawyer), Ned (Nancy Martens) and Mark (Carlene Hurdsman).
Helen was a wonderful homemaker and loved to knit and crochet. Her passion was crocheting and she made afghans for every one of her kids and grandchildren. Every time she heard someone was having a baby in the family, she made that baby an afghan. She also made many afghans and gave them to the church to be distributed to anyone in need.
Helen was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served faithfully in many positions.
After husband Ariel died, she substituted at the school lunch room in 1950. In 1951 the school principal asked her to be a substitute teacher in the elementary. In 1952, they asked her to take over and teach a fifth grade class, which she taught for several years until she moved to the sixth grade, teaching there until she retired in 1974.
During the summers she took extension classes, graduating from the University of Wyoming with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education in 1960.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Ariel; her parents, Herbert and Susan Bassett; two sisters, Marie Baird and Mary Eliza aka Mamie Brimhall; her only brother, Fred Theon Bassett, one son, Robert Walker, two granddaughters in-law, Sue Ferguson Walker and Melinda Lake Walker and two great-granddaughters.
She had many grandchildren: Ron (JoAnn), Craig (Careen), Lynn (Brent) Bassett, Sandy (Dave) Briggs, Jim (Debbie), Beverly (Mark) Seward, Susan (David) Wilkerson, Karen (Bart) Jones, David (Tara), Mike (Missy), Greg (Gwen), Terry (Charleen), Kari (Jim) Carter, Jon (Becky), Annette (Mitch) Negro, Deseree (Chris) Allen, Charles (Chuck), Barry (Suzette), Shawn (Annie), Todd (Bonnie), Casey (Beverly) and Lance (Dena) and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Helen was a good teacher and many said she was the best teacher they ever had.
She was always good to her grandchildren and tried to treat them fairly. She was always there for her family and supported them in everything they chose to do.
