On January 18, 1838 in Gibson County, Joshua married Eliza Jane Stewart, daughter of John Stewart and Eleanor Tougas Levoilette.
In 1850, Joshua, age 32, a farmer, and his wife, Eliza, age 30, were living in Hunt County, Texas. They had three children, all born in Indiana: Theodore Perry, age 9; George Cleveland, age 7; and Mary Eleanor, age 1.
Joshua was elected August 2, 1852 and again on August 4, 1856 as Justice of the Peace, Hunt County, Texas. Joshua was educated as an attorney but was never admitted to the Bar because he refused to take the oath to defend a man right or wrong.
In 1860, Joshua and Eliza were living in Shiloh, Texas (Hunt County), and five children were living with them: Theodore Perry, age 19, born in Indiana; George Cleveland, age 16, born in Indiana; Helen Mildred, age 10, born in Texas; Joseph Embree, age 6, born in Texas; and Robert Elisha., age 4, born in Texas.
Joshua fought in the Civil War. He fought for the Confederacy and joined Company K, 9th Regiment, of the Texas Cavalry on October 14, 1861.
Joshua died in 1879 and was buried in Stewart Cemetery in Hunt County, Texas.
In 1880, Eliza, age 53 and a widow, was living with her son, Joseph Embree Woods and his family. Also living in the household was Eliza Jane's Mother, Eleanor Stewart, and Eliza Jane's daughter, Helen Woods.
Eliza Jane died in 1880 in Hunt County and was buried in Stewart Cemetery beside her husband.
