Actor. Born in Vienna, Austria, he was a brilliant character performer best known for his best supporting actor Oscar award winning role as Captain Alfred Dreyfus in the film "The Life of Emile Zola" (1937). He began his career appearing in a few silent pictures in Germany and Austria, before relocating to America in the 1920s. After performing in several successful Broadway productions, he made his U.S. screen debut in "King of Kings" (1927). A popular box office attraction, his many credits include "Marie Antoinette" (1938), "The Man in the Iron Mask" (1939), "The Three Musketeers" (1939), "Flame of the Barbary Coast" (1945) and "The Diary of Anne Frank" (1959). For television, he appeared on "Hallmark Hall of Fame", "Dr. Kildare", "Twilight Zone", "The Untouchables" and "77 Sunset Strip". He died of a heart attack at age 67 in New York City and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His father was renowned stage and film actor Rudolf Schildkraut.
