A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York August 27, 1861, with Co. H, 87th Pa Inf, at the rank of private and assigned as company teamster. An accident while carrying wood January 1863 opened a middle finger from knuckle to end. Captured at the battle of Carter's Woods June 15, 1863, and incarcerated on Belle Isle in Richmond. Following his parole, he deserted from Camp Parole in Annapolis, Maryland, with hundreds of others but returned to duty with the regiment on October 29. Detached to the division as a teamster during the winter of 1863-64. Honorably discharged with his company in York on October 13, 1864.
Years later at pension application time, the unresolved desertion charge reared its ugly head. As it did for almost all the 87th Pa men who deserted from Camp Parole, the War Department changed the desertion status to "absent without leave" so he could receive a pension.
